As smartphone image quality continues rising with each new release of the latest smartphone so does the impact and effects of video.  I am not talking about large-scale productions that require film crews and extremely expensive equipment I am talking about snapping footage with your smartphones and then using simple video editing software—see free examples suggested by Techradar.

Organizations are facing increasing pressure to find the best talent possible, and not only find them but attract them to work for their organizations.  It’s not a talent shortage problem it’s a situation where organizations are recruiting top talent from all four corners of the globe, and not just within a specific geographic location in which an office location be.

This shift in the marketplace has put more power in the hands of job seekers simply because of the simple supply and demand equation.  Any given job seeker now has access to a greater number of organizations and opportunities, so it’s not exactly rocket science to realize that HR and Recruiting functions better partner up with their sales and marketing colleagues and come up with some creative ways to differentiate themselves as a great employer and be competitive within this increasingly complex talent maze.  A great way to do this is leveraging video.

Why Video?

There are many benefits to using video, including highly visual and interactive.  You want people to remember your organization, or keep your organization “top of mind”.  It’s all about content retention, and research shows that people best learn and retain content through visual techniques.  If you compare the effects of text, image and video content, video is far more effective than the former two content methods in retaining content.   I am not saying you abandon text and images I am saying that video needs to be an integral part of any recruitment function.  Video evokes real emotion through movements, visual cues and verbal messaging.  It’s dynamic and can be a huge contributor to SEO strategy.

Thought-leader Jessica Miller-Merrell of Blogging4Jobs published a fantastic blog post titled, “The Benefits of Recruiting & Sourcing with YouTube Videos“.  The post also includes an infographic that shows why it’s important to use video (notably YouTube) for recruiting.  Her argument is truly compelling.

So, “Who’s Doing It”?

Many organizations have created fantastic videos showcasing their workplaces, employees, culture and open vacancies.  I think it’s safe to say that the organizations that generate the most attention with their use of video are the Googles, Facebooks and Twitters of the world simply because they have what is perceived to be “uber-fun” work environments.  But there are many other organizations that do not necessarily fall into this uber-fun category that are using video just as well, if not better.  Here are a few of my favourites, simply because they showcase real employees, are candid, simple and genuine.
