At Cadent, inclusion is more than just a framework; it’s a heartfelt commitment to ensuring every colleague feels supported, valued, and empowered to thrive. Winning the 2024 Culture Pioneers Award for Inclusion is a humbling recognition of our ongoing efforts to embed inclusion into every part of our organisation.
A Unique Approach to Inclusion
Our approach goes beyond the traditional strands of diversity. Inclusion at Cadent means making sure everyone—regardless of their background or circumstances—feels seen, heard, and supported. This has been achieved through the combined efforts of all our Employee Communities, with seven communities in total, ensuring there is a community for everyone to join.
Martin Rimmer, Cadent’s Chief People Officer, echoed this commitment when he said, “The executive team and I are focused on challenging the status quo and working hard to break the mould of the traditional utilities sector.” This sentiment is reflected in initiatives like the Grief Awareness Employee Community, which goes beyond policy to create a culture of care and inclusion.
The Grief Awareness Employee Community is one of our more recently established communities and has already been the driving force behind some of our inclusion initiatives. providing a safe space for colleagues to share their experiences and offering support to those navigating personal loss. What began as a small initiative has grown into a movement that is shaping our culture, not just through policies, but by transforming how we connect and care for each other.
Turning Compassion into Action
From training workshops to practical support, the Grief Awareness Employee Community has made a tangible impact across Cadent. A standout moment was our collaboration with the National Bereavement Service, where we hosted a moving podcast and launched training sessions to explore the impact of grief and how workplaces can provide meaningful support.
This commitment extends beyond office walls. For our operational teams, we introduced care boxes designed to bring comfort to colleagues who needed a little extra support during challenging times. These small but heartfelt gestures reflect our belief that inclusion isn’t just a policy; it’s about creating a culture of kindness, care, and humanity.
A Culture Built on Community
Our achievements are a testament to the collective efforts of our people. Through all of our Employee Communities including the Grief Awareness community and broader inclusion initiatives, through this collaboration, we’ve created a culture where every voice matters. This award is not just about recognition—it’s about celebrating the courage of those who’ve shared their stories and inspired meaningful change.
Diane Lightfoot, CEO of the Business Disability Forum and a Culture Pioneers judge, captured it perfectly when she highlighted Claire Valentine’s leadership and the innovative approach Cadent has taken to inclusion.
Looking Ahead
This award marks an important milestone, but it’s just the beginning of our journey. We are committed to continuing this work, ensuring that inclusion remains at the heart of our culture, and that every colleague feels empowered to bring their whole selves to work.
As we look to the future, we’re excited to share our story and learn from others who share our passion for inclusion. Together, we can create workplaces that are kinder, more compassionate, and truly welcoming for all.
Conclusion
At Cadent, inclusion isn’t just a goal—it’s a commitment we live and breathe every day. Thanks to the combined efforts of all our Employee Communities and the unwavering dedication of our colleagues, we’re making a real difference.
