Celebrating Ethical Leadership

At a time when organizational trust and responsible governance are more crucial than ever, the HR community gathered at SHRM’s 2025 Annual Conference & Expo in San Diego to spotlight one of the business world’s most values-driven leaders. Brian Moynihan, Chairman and CEO of Bank of America, was named the 2025 Ethical Leader of the Year—an accolade jointly presented by SHRM and the William G. McGowan Charitable Fund.

Now in its fourth year, the Ethical Leader of the Year Award recognizes individuals at the helm of major organizations who demonstrate a steadfast commitment to ethical leadership, stakeholder accountability, and sustainable impact. Past recipients include leaders from Prudential and Delta Air Lines, and this year’s honoree joins an elite group of executives driving both financial performance and values-based leadership.

Accepting the award, Moynihan pointed to Bank of America’s guiding philosophy of “responsible growth,” saying,

“I accept this award on behalf of the more than 200,000 teammates at Bank of America who live these values every day. Our work is guided by a simple principle—creating opportunity for all we serve: clients, our teammates, our communities, and our shareholders.”

Brian Peckrill, Executive Director of the William G. McGowan Charitable Fund, noted that Moynihan’s leadership exemplifies the kind of ethical stewardship the Fund seeks to amplify.

“His commitment to responsible growth has not only shaped Bank of America’s trajectory but also set a powerful example for global corporate leadership in 2025 and beyond.”

The award ceremony was co-hosted by SHRM President and CEO Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., who underlined the integral connection between HR and ethical governance.

“Building a strong organizational culture requires a clear commitment to understanding, defining, and living workplace ethics. It is a privilege to celebrate Brian Moynihan—a CEO who truly embodies the principles of ethical leadership and stewardship.”

For HR leaders, the award serves as both an inspiration and a call to action. Ethical leadership doesn’t just live at the C-suite level—it must be cultivated and reinforced across every layer of the organization. As companies navigate complex workplace challenges—from AI adoption and DEI efforts to employee wellbeing and remote culture—this kind of principled leadership becomes a competitive advantage.

Moynihan’s recognition comes at a pivotal moment when HR leaders are increasingly seen as strategic partners in shaping ethical, resilient, and inclusive workplaces. As the McGowan Fund and SHRM continue to spotlight leaders who champion these values, the message is clear: integrity is not just admirable—it’s essential.
