HR Conference

The Future of Work is Here!

By Jackye Clayton, Associate Editor at HR Gazette

If you missed UNLEASH America 2025—aka The International Festival of HR—in Vegas, you genuinely missed the HR event of the year. Picture the smartest minds in HR and tech, gathering to shape the future of work, leadership, and innovation. But don’t sweat it—I’ve got you covered with an honest, high-energy recap, the good, the real, and even some of the things we usually whisper about. Let’s dive in!

Day 1: AI Takes the Spotlight (For Real)

The conference exploded into action with Dr. Joy Buolamwini, founder of the Algorithmic Justice League. Dr. Buolamwini brought unfiltered realness, confronting the biases lurking within AI systems head-on. Her keynote, “Unmasking AI,” challenged us to not just accept tech blindly but to actively hold it accountable. Her unforgettable line, “You can’t have inclusion without oversight,” instantly became the mantra we all needed.

Then we dove into the AI & Talent Summit, featuring raw and authentic takes from Jason Desentz (Toshiba) and Avani Prabhakar (Atlassian). They unpacked how AI can both empower and endanger workplace culture if misused. Prabhakar’s blunt reminder was key: treating people as replaceable is the quickest route to losing talent.

But let’s talk about the Startup Competition. Honestly, this was a highlight. HireBrain won hearts and minds with their fresh approach to hiring, blending simplicity and behavioral science seamlessly. It felt like seeing HR’s next wave live on stage.

And yes, the networking afterward felt real and refreshing. More genuine connection, less transactional awkwardness.

Day 2: DEI & Tech We Have to Face the Truth

MIT’s Max Tegmark opened day two by reminding everyone that AI isn’t a threat; ignorance about AI is. His straight talk was a rallying cry: learn how to leverage AI, or risk being left behind. Tegmark’s “AI won’t steal your job, but someone who knows how to use AI effectively just might,” was a direct challenge to step up.

Next, the HR Tech Awards spotlighted innovations worth noticing, but let’s be honest. Can I be frank? Sometimes it felt hard to tell groundbreaking tech from flashy marketing. Truth is, not every “innovative” tool truly disrupts the space; discerning leaders need to separate hype from substance.

Then came the deeply impactful DEI panel. Valeisha Butterfield didn’t mince words, emphasizing that authentic DEI is non-negotiable. “Authenticity is your armor; commitment is your shield,” she declared, capturing precisely why DEI isn’t optional, despite pushbacks and political pressures.

The day’s deeper dive sessions tackled genuine challenges, from navigating political pushback to effectively measuring DEI impact. Not every conversation was comfortable, but all felt necessary. It raised an important question: are these powerful insights reaching everyone or just an “elite” few? Something worth reflecting on as we move forward.

Day 3: The Human Future of Work

Josh Bersin anchored day three with his typically incisive keynote, warning clearly: 2025 is pivotal. Bersin’s message echoed loud and clear: adapt to AI-driven workplaces or risk obsolescence. There’s no sugarcoating it. HR must evolve, quickly.

The panel discussions, especially featuring Microsoft, SAP, and NYU, offered concrete guidance on humanizing AI. Microsoft’s strong stance on transparent and ethical AI was particularly notable, emphasizing the need for trust at every level.

Throughout the day, practical workshops reinforced leadership authenticity, employee engagement, and strategic innovation. You know, real tools and strategies we could immediately implement. This wasn’t theory; it was actionable insight.

The Real ROI of Conferences:

But let’s talk about the elephant in the room.ROI. Conferences are costly, and the real value isn’t always clear. Did every session deliver groundbreaking insights? No. Did some conversations feel a bit pay-to-play or overly exclusive? Absolutely. But the gems were undeniable, and the authentic moments of insight, inspiration, and community genuinely outweighed the fluff.

Real talk: The true ROI from UNLEASH comes when you take the knowledge back home and actually implement it. If you don’t, then yes, it’s just another flashy Vegas event. But if you leverage what you learn, the impact can genuinely transform your workplace.

Jackye’s Realest Takeaways:

  • AI Isn’t Optional: Use AI strategically, ethically, and continuously verify its fairness.
  • Authentic DEI: Genuine commitment is your strongest asset. Lip service won’t cut it.
  • Discerning Innovation: Look beyond hype. True innovation drives meaningful change, not just flashy demos.
  • Employee Experience Wins: Human-centric workplaces aren’t just nice-to-have. They’re your competitive edge.

My Challenge to You:

Don’t let UNLEASH insights stay in Vegas. Take one real, actionable step now. Audit your AI tools. Reevaluate your DEI efforts. Investigate new tech solutions. Do something tangible because the future is here and it’s unapologetically real and human.

Ready to make it happen? Let’s keep this conversation alive.

Catch you at UNLEASH 2026 (mark those calendars—March 17–19!). Secure your spot early because, trust me, you don’t want to miss what’s coming next.
