A couple of days ago I had the fortunate opportunity to volunteer as a “mentor” at an evening seminar about “Discovering Your Personal Brand” with Bobby Umar of Raeallan.  I really enjoyed the experience and engaging with the panel, which consisted of Cher JonesKatia MillarRon TiteAndy StroteMira Sirotic and of course Bobby Umar.  It was a fantastic conversation about the “why” of personal branding and specific tips and ideas around getting started with using online tools as a way to build a personal brand.

Panel DYPB2013

This post is about a specific response from one of the panelists, Ron Tite to a question that came from the audience.

The Question…

The question was, “what is the best way to start building your brand online”?  Great question isn’t it?  There were a myriad of responses from the panel, but the one that stood out of me by far was from Ron Tite of The Tite Group.

The Response…

Ron responded with what he calls the “4 Cs of Content Marketing”, which is the core of what his business does.  Here are the 4 Cs and how he described them within the context of the question that was asked.

  1. Consumption – you basically need to learn what’s happening out in the space before you can really contribute.  What are the tools being used?  Who are the thought-leaders?  What are the trends?  What content do you like, dislike?
  2. Curation – this is where you get to share all of the great content you have consumed to your audiences via whatever channels you prefer.  Channels could be your social media channels like Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, LinkedIn, Pinterest and others.  Or they could be non-social channels like email.  Whatever the case may be, this is the part where you to demonstrate to your audience what you value as great content.
  3. Creation – this is the part where you create your own content rather than simply sharing others’.  There are many forms of content creation, including video, blog posts, articles, status updates, images and so forth.  For the most part this fresh content that you are creating aligns with what you have been curating up to this point.
  4. Connection – this is the part of the equation where you start to connect all of your great content with your audience in a meaningful way.  Who are your true fans?  Are you and how are you engaging with them?  Where are they?  Can you measure the impact that your content is having on them?  What does all of this do for your own personal brand?
